My Initial Months in Cyber Security - Jonathan Adams

What I initially noticed is what a vibrant and innovative industry I had joined, with many diverse characters contributing to it!

Thanks for taking the time to read my article. I’m Jonathan (Jonny) and joined LoughTec a few months ago, to head up Cyber Security Sales. LoughTec specialises in protecting the worlds critical infrastructure (Think anything key to how you live your life) with specific cyber security solutions, such as secure file upload and secure file storage, and we proudly list Sage, Landsbankinn and a UK Law Enforcement Agency as our key customers.

I had been working in the clothing and PPE industry for several years, covering numerous commercial roles and felt it was time to spread my wings, especially with the ‘C’ word putting life into perspective. Now, even though I had no experience in Commercial IT roles or IT roles in general, I have a keen interest in technology and how it was driving the world forward. So when a role in the incredibly interesting and developing world of cyber security came up, I was compelled to apply – especially after seeing cyber-attacks pop up on the news every week. I was ultimately successful in my application and here we are!

 

As a Commercial Lead in an innovative company, I strive to only offer the correct product to the correct company – hopefully reducing a lot of this noise. This is something I’ve felt strongly about throughout my career, regardless of selling secure file storage solutions or face masks!

A lot of noise

Upon joining I knew I had a lot to learn and understand, which is common when joining any new industry. What I initially noticed is what a vibrant and innovative industry I had joined, with many diverse characters contributing to it! After WFH for over a year, I also appreciated the joy of fast internet and a proper desk!

However upon joining I really noticed how much ‘noise’ there was in the sector – hundreds of companies selling hundreds of products and solutions, that to me all ultimately appeared to do the same thing! It became clear to me that even for seasoned professionals, it is difficult to have a grasp of all of the solutions out there. In fact, there are over 1000 products in the Magic Quadrant! As a keen petrol (and electric) head it felt similar to having thousands of options which choosing a new car – which do you choose, how does it compare to others, what happens when a new model comes out?!

So it seems finding the solution that best fits your company is not easy – whether understanding actual weaknesses in your posture, understanding the 1000s of products that do many complex roles and understanding whether to layer/stack your security with a few of these many many many options or simply using one or two is sufficient.

Who do you trust?

Upon gaining a much deeper understanding of the solutions which many providers claim is the best (again something that is natural), it became clear that it must be very difficult for companies to know who to trust and ultimately select as a trusted security partner. After all, these are key long term partnerships being built, rather than a simple one time purchase – very much the way I treat purchasing a car, as I have been with the same brand my entire driving life!

Future

So with my initial months in cyber long gone, I really look forward to the coming months and years, both working with our trusted customers, partners and prospective customers to educate and illustrate what I feel the best solution is and hopefully reduce some of the ever-growing noise that exists in cyber security!
