Cloud Computing and Software as a Service

With Cloud Computing, instead of maintaining your own IT hardware and software systems in-house, businesses move to a subscription model, where the software is accessed via the Internet. You access IT resources such as software systems, databases and email via the Internet without having to install those resources on your own computers. Generally you “pay-as-you-go” instead of paying an up-front license fee, and the resources are available to you ‘on demand’ i.e. whenever and wherever you want them. Gmail, Facebook and Hotmail are common examples of cloud based systems, and there are now a growing range of business applications available as cloud services such as Microsoft Office 365 or Salesforce.

Cloud computing can raise data protection and security issues for your business because the data is stored by a third party and often in a different jurisdiction. There are different models of cloud computing to choose from – public cloud, private cloud and hybrid models – which have different implications regarding your data. Loughtec can advise you on which elements of your current IS infrastructure are suitable for a move to the cloud and we can help you plan your migration.
