Loughtec set sail with LPHC

June 08, 2011

Challenge

Londonderry Port found that the levels of electronic data being generated by the business were growing exponentially and that their existing IT infrastructure was unable to cope. Furthermore, the business was having to deal with higher volumes of payment and maintenance transactions within its expanding supply chain. In an effort to deal with this the IT team, led by Mark Doherty, set out to research a new data storage solution to address the challenges being faced.

During this exercise Londonderry Port consulted their preferred IT solution partner, Loughtec, and laid out the requirement to provide a solution that would not only address the immediate requirement but would also provide future scalability and increased performance at a competitive price.

Solution

The solution comprised of a managed S2600 storage system and 2TB of available storage. The SAN was coupled with an ML350 Server from HP. On this platform Loughtec installed VMware. In the VMware environment there are multiple servers running which include windows 2008, Ericom WebConnect, ERP Implementation and a Maintenance Management System. As a result of this install the port is now saving over £2,000 per year in Server running costs and has future proofed all storage needs for the foreseeable future.

Due to the strong relationship between Huawei Symantec and Loughtec, Loughtec was able to present the S2600 as a unique and cost-effective storage solution to fit Londonderry Port’s requirements. Huawei Symantec’s Oceanspace S2600 is a storage product for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). Based on a creative architecture design, the S2600 offers a complete storage solution with the five E-features – Evolutionary, Easy, Enhanced, Energy-saving, and Economical.

Benefits

Speaking about the newly deployed solution Mark Doherty explained: "We are extremely happy with our decision to adopt a new brand technology from the market place. Loughtec’s clear understanding of our business needs led us to realise that there really are other options out there for consideration. The Huawei Symantec solution has delivered on all counts."

Sean McDermott, Director at Loughtec added: "Loughtec have put a considerable amount of time and effort into finding a reliable and cost effective SAN solution for our customer base. The success of the installation at the port has proven to us that we have found that solution in the Huawei Symantec SAN."
